Background

The Melbourne Water Constructed Waterway Manual (CWM), completed in December 2019, brings together engineering, geomorphology, ecology, flood management and liveability elements in a comprehensive resource for waterway and sub-division engineers, landscape architects, urban designers and ecologists.

The manual was created in response to a strong need for consistent delivery of best practice design for constructed waterways. Application of manual principles ensures quality ecological and urban design outcomes and delivery of assets that are sustainable to maintain.

This ¾ day online training is for practitioners from Victorian local government and Catchment Management Authorities - (CMAs) who are responsible for reviewing waterway design submissions and need to understand the required design principles. The session will include interactive break out discussion groups, case studies and design drawings to illustrate how to review waterway design submissions.

Purpose of this training

  • To equip those reviewing Constructed Waterway designs to how to use the CWM Manual when undertaking or reviewing waterway design submissions.
  • Support industry uptake & implementation of Melbourne Water’s Constructed Waterways Design Manual.
  • Facilitate efficient design review procedures and support delivery of best practice constructed waterways.

Learning objectives

  • Confidence in using the CWM Manual to review a submitted waterway design
  • Understanding of deemed to comply and design acceptance procedures
  • Fundaments of constructed waterway ecological values, hydrology & hydraulics, physical form & stability
  • Understanding of vegetation function and CWM design requirements
  • Understanding of post construction risk assessment

Target Audience

  • Staff from regional Local Councils and Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) responsible for design review and approval for constructed waterway design submissions.
  • This will include engineers, WSUD officers and relevant planning practitioners.

Trainers

Our trainers are experts in their field and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. Both trainers are key developers of the Melbourne Water Constructed Waterways Design Manual completed in 2019

Jonathon McLean: Alluvium

Jonathon is a principal consultant at Alluvium who is passionate about the transformation of our cities towards a more water sensitive approach. With over 25 years' experience in the urban water sector Jonathon’s expertise lies in understanding and managing the impact of urbanisation on catchment hydrology, waterways and ecological processes. He has been a leading technical contributor on a range of best practice guidelines including Melbourne Water’s Waterway Corridor Guidelines and the Constructed Waterways Design Manual.

Jenny Butcher: Alluvium

Jenny is an environmental engineer at Alluvium with a strong interest in urban water, waterway management and liveability. Jenny has worked on a variety of water quality, urban water, water sensitive urban design (WSUD), waterway naturalisation and water policy projects. Jenny was recently heavily involved in the finalisation of the Constructed Waterways Design Manual for Melbourne Water, responsible for finalising technical elements for waterway design,  and producing new waterway design standard drawings.
