Launch of the Litter Prevention Toolkit - Bin it or Bring it Home!

To celebrate World Environment Day (June 5th), Melbourne Water is launching a ‘Litter Prevention Toolkit’!

Drawing on behaviour change research and insights from a stakeholder forum, the toolkit addresses a key gap in public understanding: the link between urban littering and its impact on our waterways.

Developed in collaboration with Shannon Behaviour Change and BehaviourWorks Australia, the toolkit is designed to empower local councils, community groups and litter advocacy organisations to tackle litter.

The toolkit provides a coordinated litter prevention message to improve litter management and waterway health across Melbourne. It includes a suite of fully prepared, print-ready and digital communication assets that are primed for immediate use by waste and stormwater managers, communication experts, councils and community groups. The range of assets are tailored to support both industry professionals and community, in addressing littering behaviours within their local area.

At the heart of the toolkit is the creative anchor, “Bin it or Bring it Home,” a simple, consistent message that underpins all assets. Throughout the toolkit, litter prevention behaviour and waterway values are promoted through clear, universal messaging that transcends language barriers and encourages positive, actionable change.

Upon launch (June 5th), the toolkit will be hosted on the Melbourne Water website, where groups can download the assets for local use. The toolkit assets include:

  • Posters and social media templates
  • Bin and floor decals
  • Litter prevention discussion guides for approaching construction groups, schools and community.

In the lead up to the launch, Melbourne Water will be hosting a webinar on June 2nd to discuss the insights and findings that shaped development of the toolkit, while providing a guided introduction to the toolkit assets and how they can be implemented. To attend the webinar, please register here.
