The Southbank precinct is located in the City of Melbourne and is a significant area supporting major businesses, tourism and recreational activities. An increase in density of seven-fold from the current population of 10,000 is proposed for the precinct. This paper provides a comparison on conventional water servicing arrangements versus new integrated water management approaches incorporating long-term sustainable infrastructure. It discusses the risks and challenges in achieving an eco-city in order to inform forward planning for water sensitive cities of the future.
