The Value of Green Infrastructure

Joe Grant and Danielle Gallet / American Rivers and the Center for Neighbourhood Technology

10/11/2010

The aim of this report is to inform decision makers about the multiple benefits of green infrastructure for communities and to guide communities in valuing the (monatary) benefits.

Green infrastructure is broken down into 5 practices:

  • 1. Green roofs
  • 2. Tree planting
  • 3. Bio-retention and infiltration
  • 4. Permeable pavement and
  • 5. Water harvesting.

These are measured across a number of benefits ranging from reducing stormwater runoff to improving community liveability. Simple pictorial icons are used to summaries the benefits for each practice. A framework is set out to enable a monetary value to be assigned to the benefits. Examples of how to apply the framework are provided.
